Japanese semiconductor firm Renesas Electronics said Thursday that it would acquire Sydney-listed software company Altium for 9.1 billion Australian dollars ($5.89 billion) in cash, as it seeks to streamline its electronics design process. Renesas said it would pay AU$68.50 per share, representing a 33.6% premium to Altium's closing price of AU$51.26 on Wednesday. Australia-listed shares of Altium jumped nearly 30% to near AU$66, while Tokyo-listed Renesas fell 3.2%. The deal has been unanimously approved by the board of both companies but its completion is subject to approvals from Altium shareholders, Australian court and regulators, Renesas said. The deal comes a month after Renesas agreed to buy Nasdaq-listed Transphorm for $5.10 per share in an all-cash deal worth $339 million.

"While we expect a very modest cyclical recovery as a whole, we continue to look for opportunities among individual stocks," Goldman Sachs' analysts, led by Daiki Takayama, wrote in the note, naming buy-rated names — including four conviction list stocks — to play the theme. The bank's conviction list comprises its top buy-rated stock ideas that are expected to beat the market. SK Hynix South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix was among the stocks that made Goldman's list of buy-rated names that are also on its conviction list. Goldman gave the stock a price target of 3,300 Japanese Yen ($22.78) implying upside of around 37.7%. Meanwhile, the bank has a target price of 29 Chinese yuan ($4.07) on Foxconn, giving it around 124.6% potential upside.

[1/2] Volkswagen's factory is seen in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo state, Brazil June 28, 2023. Demand for chips has risen dramatically in the car industry in line with electric vehicle production and the need for increasingly complex software. Volkswagen and Franco-Italian chipmaker STMicroelectronics (STMPA.PA) announced plans last July to co-develop a new semiconductor, marking VW's first direct relationship with a second- and third-rank semiconductor supplier. Volkswagen has not struck a direct supply relationship with TSMC - the world's biggest contract manufacturer of semiconductors - but meets with them every few weeks to communicate its demand situation, Schnake said. The carmaker also plans to reduce the variety of chips required in its vehicles to simplify the supply chain, which will also help simplify its software offering, Schnake added.

Morgan Stanley has identified three Asia Pacific stocks as "high conviction" and actionable trade ideas. The bank said the three stock ideas highlight "actionable, high-conviction calls" made by its equity research team in the preceding week. However, it cautioned that investors should not interpret these stock ideas as portfolios. Treating 'Three Actionable Ideas' ideas as a portfolio will subject you to the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investments," the bank said. Morgan Stanley said its price target was probability-weighted, giving 30% to its bull case and 60% to its base case scenarios.

Powerchip and Japanese financial firm SBI Holdings (8473.T) earlier this month said they aim to attract government subsidies to build the plant amid a wave of investment in Japan aimed at boosting its chip manufacturing capabilities. "I think about five to seven years... it depends on the business," Joe Wu, President of PSMC Japan, told Reuters when asked about the timing for a potential listing. Powerchip said it sees scope for additional foundry capacity in Japan, which has seen a lack of investment. The Taiwanese firm previously set up a joint venture in China to build a chip factory which listed in Shanghai this year. Powerchip and SBI hope to attract additional funds for the Japan business and are targeting chip industry customers and financial investors as potential backers, Wu said.

HONG KONG, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - A government-led buyout signals more uncertainty ahead for a chip industry grappling with oversupply and geopolitics. The state-backed Japan Investment Corp will take over JSR (4185.T), which makes light-sensitive chemicals vital to manufacturing semiconductors, among other things. In recent years, the conglomerate has pivoted from a low-margin business of selling synthetic rubber used to make tyres to focus on semiconductor materials - primarily photoresists - and biopharmaceuticals. Yet JIC's mandate to boost the country’s global competitiveness and its focus on consolidating industries helps to justify the hefty premium. Either way, the government's focus on elevating national chipmaking champions creates fresh uncertainty for JSR's foreign customers like South Korea's Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (2330.TW).

TOKYO, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Japan's state-backed chip venture Rapidus will need about 7 trillion yen ($54 billion) of mostly taxpayer money to begin mass producing advanced logic chips in around 2027, its chairman, Tetsuro Higashi, told Reuters on Thursday. "In the past, the United States hindered Japan's chip industry growth. Japan and the United States worry that friction with China will result in semiconductor shortages that could threaten economic growth. Japan's most advanced semiconductor factory is a 40 nanometre plant owned by Renesas Electronics (6723.T). For them, the decision to invest will be taken when they are able assess our technology and production plans."
From its original epicentre in the north, including the capital Beijing, COVID-19 infections are spreading throughout the country and cases are impeding workforces in manufacturing belts, including the Yangtze River Delta, near Shanghai. With mass testing halted after China abruptly dropped its zero-COVID policy this month, official data no longer reliably captures new case numbers. Some estimates, however, predict the wave currently sweeping the country could infect up to 60% of China's 1.4 billion-strong population. LOGISTICS LOGJAMLeading automobile chipmaker, Renesas Electronics Corp (6723.T) suspended production at its Beijing plant last Friday due to COVID-19 infections, but said it would re-open Tuesday. For now, however, that impact is being limited in part by economic hardships elsewhere in the world denting demand for products from China.

TOKYO, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Japanese chip maker Renesas Electronics Corp (6723.T) suspended work at its Beijing plant on Friday because of COVID-19 infections, and will keep the facility shut for several days, a spokesperson said on Monday. "There won't be much impact for a stoppage that lasts only several days," the spokesperson said. A recent surge in COVID cases in China has hit major urban centres throughout the nation. Renesas is closely watched by investors because it makes around a third of all the microcontroller chips used by the world's carmakers. Investors will have a second opportunity to take part in the stock market rally after China announced a relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, according to Bank of America. The Wall Street bank said Chinese stocks had risen substantially after Beijing's "credible policy easing actions" triggered a risk-on move in markets. The bank said it was now seeing "nascent signs" of fundamental earnings data turning positive for stocks, which is likely to set off the second leg of a market rally. The bank named 30 global stocks exposed to China to leverage the "cyclicals and re-opening" theme. According to Bank of America, nearly a quarter of the company's revenue comes from sales to China.
The shortage of semiconductors during a boom in electric vehicle sales could help raise profits at a handful of chip makers, according to Bank of America. The investment bank said shares of U.S.-listed European chip maker STMicroelectronics and Japan's Renesas Electronics could rise by more than 75% over the next year on that trend. Although global automotive sales are expected to rise by just 3-4% over the next two years, the transition to EV cars means chip sales are set to grow by 7-9% year after year for the next two years, the Wall Street bank said. The company said auto revenues grew 44% in 2021 due to chip sales for in-car connectivity devices. Other chip stocks set to benefit from the trend to EV vehicles include U.S.-based companies Marvell , Microchip , Nvidia and Ambarella , Wolfspeed , and Onsemi , as well as European semiconductor manufacturers NXP and Soitec .
